Corporate Social Responsibility

Read the HANOS CSR policy here

For more than 45 years, we have strived to be the best partner for our customers. It required flexibility and adaptability from HANOS to deal with all changes during that period. We realise that with the growth of HANOS, our impact on people, animals and the environment has also increased.

We believe taking responsibility for the transition to a more sustainable food system is important. Our vision is to strive for economic returns with attention to people and the environment. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is an important prerequisite, and we want to move towards a more proactive approach to sustainability. We have elaborated our sustainable ambition in a CSR policy to achieve this. We are working to deliver on that promise with our employees and other partners.

Our CSR policy focuses on several themes aimed at our impact on people and the environment. We have set a goal for each theme and described the measures by which we will reach these goals by 2025. This policy largely applies to both the Netherlands and Belgium. For Belgium, minor adjustments may still be made to the measures.

Sustainability themes

Sustainability themes:

HANOS' CSR policy is divided into seven sustainability themes:

  1. Employees & Society
  2. Food Waste
  3. Energy
  4. Transport
  5. Waste
  6. Packaging
  7. Assortment & Purchasing

Energy and Transport

Energy and Transport

  • HANOS wants at least 40% less CO2 emissions from its own electricity, gas and fuel consumption in 2030 compared to 2020.

We want to reduce our CO2 emissions by consuming less energy and purchasing more green energy. We are going to invest in more efficient temperature control and lighting, for example, by covering cooling installations and installing LED lighting. We will also conduct a feasibility study for installing solar panels on the roofs and purchasing green electricity. We drive through the Netherlands daily with our fleet of more than 350 trucks. We want to reduce our CO2 emissions by using less fuel and driving cleaner. We do this by, for example, focusing on more efficient planning of routes, fewer subsequent deliveries, improving the resistance of trucks and more. This year we will also analyse the feasibility of electric transport, hydrogen trucks and cleaner fuels such as HVO.

Waste

  • HANOS wants to produce at least 10% less waste relative to turnover in 2025 compared to 2020.
  • HANOS aims to separate at least 70% of its waste by 2025.

This year we will look at all locations to see which waste flows are released and ensure that the correct waste bins are also available everywhere to make it easier for all employees to separate waste properly. As soon as the waste system has been renewed, everyone will receive the correct instructions. We will also take more concrete steps, such as further digitization, separating plastic waste and, where possible working more with reusable products.

Packaging

Packaging

  • HANOS wants to reduce the packaging weight (kilo packaging per kilo of product).
  • HANOS wants to make its packaging more circular.

Packaging is indispensable for maintaining quality and combating food waste. At the same time, packaging impacts the environment due to the large amounts of plastic and plastic pollution. We are going to make the packaging of all private label products and the packaging used in cash-and-carry wholesalers lighter and recyclable.

Assortment & Purchasing

Assortment & Purchasing

  • HANOS wants to expand the sustainable range and increase the share of turnover from sustainable products.
  • HANOS wants to implement a sustainable purchasing policy.

Assortment & purchasing will be one of the most important themes in 2022. In order to limit our impact on the environment, we will, first of all, make our range more sustainable. We want to offer more products to customers that are produced with care and attention for people, animals, the environment and the environment. That starts with making a good inventory of the sustainability of our current range. We will make it possible for customers to recognise sustainable products through a logo in the ordering system and the cash-and-carry wholesalers. We will also better integrate CSR into our purchasing policy and set stricter CSR requirements and monitor suppliers. The ultimate goal is to add more and more sustainable products to our range and to motivate customers to make more sustainable choices.

Food Waste

Food Waste

  • HANOS remains committed to reducing internal food waste.

Food waste is one of the biggest challenges. We have been trying to limit our waste for years. However, there is always room for improvement, which is why we are taking steps to map our food waste even more accurately. We also want to continue to work to limit food waste. We will invest in smarter purchasing of fresh products, improving shelf life and looking at possibilities for collaborating with parties that give a second life to wasted food.

Employees & Society

Employees & Society

  • HANOS wants to improve the sustainable employability of its employees.
  • HANOS wants to improve job satisfaction and inclusivity in the workplace.

More than 3000 employees give their energy to our company. We want to be an organisation where satisfied and proud employees realise our ambitions together and where everyone gets the best out of themselves. We will try to increase sustainable employability by focusing on vitality (our employees' mental and physical health), including a vitality policy and the further development of the HANOS Academy. We also want to give everyone a fair chance and hire more people with vulnerable employment positions. We believe it is important to create a working environment where employees enjoy their work now and in the future and are sustainably employable.
