Deposits on PET bottles and cans
To reduce litter and its impact on the environment, the Dutch deposit system was extended to include cans on 1 April 2023. This brings changes with it. We have listed the most important changes for you.

The deposit system in brief
A deposit was already charged on large PET bottles (€0.25 per bottle) and small PET bottles (€0.15 per bottle).
Since 1 April 2023, the Dutch deposit system has been extended to include a deposit on cans (€0.15 per can).
A deposit is mandatory for both alcoholic drinks in cans (beer, wine, mixed drinks) and non-alcoholic drinks in cans (soft drinks, water, milk and juice) with a volume of three litres or less.
The deposit requirement does not apply to cans containing liquids that are not primarily intended for drinking, or to (tinned food) cans for non-liquids.
Every can subject to a deposit can be recognised by the deposit logo on the label. The label has a new barcode and a new HANOS item number.
There is, of course, a transition period: suppliers, wholesalers and wholesale customers may simply use up their existing stock.
